EDF - 5.2

EDF-5.2 is a glass bioreactor with the working volume 4.5 l (total volume 6.2 l). The bioreactor is mounted on stainless steel pipeline legs. The controller, pump box, flasks and control cabinet a mounted on frame, which is placed behind the bioreactors. The bioreactor consists of the following main parts (see references in the picture):

  1. Frame
  2. Bioreactor vessel
  3. bioprocess controller BIO-3
  4. Peristaltic pumps unit
  5. Control cabinet
  6. Air supply device
  7. Electromagnetic valve
  8. Water valve

The bioreactor is sterilisable in situ or autoclaved. Sterilisation in situ is ensured by a 750 W heater located in the lower lid of the bioreactor vessel. The protecting jacket during the sterilisation in situ is used.

At the compressed air input, there are a stop valve, a rotameter, a microbiological filter and a counter pressure valve.

The frame is used for mounting the devices necessary for bioreactor control, i.e. a peristaltic pumps unit, a bioprocess controller BIO-3, a control cabinet, a rotameter and a shelf for placing the pumped liquid flasks. The connection of additional pump block is possible. In the control cabinet is placed the frequency inverter, power switch, solid-state relay (for heater control).

The bioprocess controller BIO-3 controls:

  1. Temperature(the temperature measured in the bioreactor vessel is controlled by transmitting the control singals to the heater or the electromagnetic cooling valve. The heater is located in the bottom of bioreactor vessel. The electromagnetic valve ensures the flow of cooled water through a stainless steel pipe (D = 17.2 mm), which has a U-form and is inserted into bioreactor vessel from upper lid).
  2. pH (the supply of acid or alkali impulses in the fermentation liquid is ensured by transmitting the control signals to the peristaltic pump).
  3. pO2 (is regulated by changing the mixer's rotational speed. As an additional option, a combined pO2 regulation by changing the mixer's rotational speed and the amount of the supplied compressed air is possible).
  4. Foam (is regulated by transmitting the control signal to the antifoam peristaltic pump. As a measuring indicator, a foam sensor is used, which is installed in the reactor's upper lid and indicates electric conductivity).
  5. The mixer's rotational speed n (the stator poles of the electromagnetic drive are located outside the reactor vessel, and the magnetic rotor inside the vessel. The stator is directly connected to the frequency converter, which is controlled with the help of the bioprocess controller).

The bioreactor vessel consists of the following main parts:

  1. Upper lid
  2. Glass cylinder part
  3. Lower part
  4. Stator
  5. Sampling device

The upper lid has holes that can be hermetically sealed. In these holes, the following devices can be installed:

  1. Needles - for the supply of substances capable of being titrated and metered;
  2. Manometer;
  3. Air condenser with a filter and an input valve;
  4. Temperature sensor;
  5. pH sensor (Mettler-Toledo, shaft diameter 12 mm);
  6. pO2 sensor (Mettler-Toledo, Inpro 6800, shaft diameter 12 mm);
  7. Cooled water pipe (occupy 2 ports);
  8. Foam sensor;
  9. Chemostat tube;
  10. Additional devices.

The glass cylinder part is a glass cylinder with flange lower and upper parts. This glass is a 100% borosilicate and is produced by SIMAX®.

Inside the Bioreactor vessel, there are:

  1. A fixed axis;
  2. A movable axis with a magnetic rotor and mixers;
  3. Baffles;
  4. Aerator.
  5. Heater.

In the lower part of the reactor, there is an electromagnetic stator, which embraces the reactor vessel from outside in its lower part. At the bioreactor vessel's bottom, a sterilisable screwed on sampling device (produced by the company "KEOFITT") is installed.
